Photo 24 Apr Inspiration can strike at any moment. The sun is out, the birds are singing in the crisp spring air, and we are in the shop delivering little bundles of joy such as this cannondale caad 10. It was once a brilliant racing steed, crushing the lungs and legs of its competition. It has been born again as the fastest hybrid on the block. From its golden chain to its thorn proof tubes, it was designed with performance and style in mind. Time to hook it up and get it in.

Text 18 Apr Skewers and Freehub Bodies

Someone asked us “Do you grease your skewer rods and freehub bodies?”

We find that question was crucial for all cyclists and have decided to create a posting for it.

When you are talking about greasing skewers you need to consider what the axles and skewers are made of. Here are some scenarios for you:

1. Steel Axles/Steel Skewers = Grease

2. Steel Axles/Ti Skewers = Grease

3. Alloy Axles/Steel Skewers = Grease

4. Alloy Axles/ Ti Skewers = Drop of lube if you desire

5. Ti Axles/Ti Skewers = Drop of lube if you desire

6. Ti Axles/Steel Skewers = Grease

If steel is involved you should grease them with a very thin layer of grease. This is to prevent rusting from your all-weather riding and stream crossings.

As far as the freehub body goes. You should check the manufacturer’s recommended spec. For example, if you are running a Chris King ring drive rear, they recommend using their ring drive oil which is a heavier oil. When we are rebuilding our Shimano XTs, Deores (love it!), etc. we use a thinner teflon based grease like Finish Line Teflon. When we do it we actually cut the grease with a penetrating lube (we call it HubJuice) so we can get better seepage throughout the freehub and pawls AND for when we do our cold weather riding our pawls do not stick when the temp drops below freezing because the grease is too thick.

Photo 10 Apr A lot of people have been asking us about our riding style. Well we here at the HubCollection offices took a poll and we find that a blue Unicorn with mane and tail that blazes like a golden inferno with the light of a thousand suns sums it up.

Photo 4 Apr Straight from the HubCollection garage, we got some awesome inspiration from our Yankee Candle haul and turned this out. 4130 cro-mo hardtail 29er with an RST M29 Air fork. Stay tuned for better photos.
Avid BB7s paired with Avid Speed Dial SL levers and Hayes rotors creates a simple system with impressive stopping power. We know what your thinking, “what cables and housing are you using?”. Good question, if you can figure it out please tell us, we just found those lying around our garage.
Shimano M552 crankset with Shimano M520 pedals and an MRP 1x chain guide. We used to have this set up as a 1x9, but we broke the derailleur while gettin’ it in so we left the guide on because it is acting as a bottom bracket spacer. 32x16 gearing for killing it on the flats and gripping and ripping on the climbs.
Weight, whatever. We are running an MTX33 rim on the rear by SunRingle with standard 2.0 spokes and a Formula DC20 Disc hub. We slapped on a wire bead Maxxis Ignitor on there so you know it’s gonna be good. Smooth loose ball bearings with a heavy rim and tire create a true momentum machine. Up front we are running a Stan’s NoTubes Arch wheel. The OG one, not the new Arch EX. We strapped on a WTB Bronson 2.2 TCS tire with Inner Peace and Dual Compound so this guy never comes up short in the grip department.
What is our favorite part of this build. The cockpit, Easton EA50 685mm handlebars with clapped out Lizardskin Charger grips, 110mm Answer Atac stem with 6mm bolts and a 26.8 x 350mm Kalloy Uno Seatpost. Budget, alloy, awesome. The perfect blend for getting it in, everywhere and at anytime. Speaking of which…

Photo 4 Apr Ah, a box of parts. One of our favorites things here at the HubCollection. What wonders does this contain. Well…let’s see. A steel drop-in handlebar, Hayes So1e disc brakes, 3 V2 octalink bottom brackets (68x113, 68x117, 68x122), and a ton of quill stem bolts. Big plans, big big plans.

Photo 3 Apr 1 note The HubCollection had to stop into Yankee Candle to get some new scents and mood lighting for our garage. Time to wrench it up.

Photo 3 Apr We just got the new magazine for the spring sales. So pumped for all the great deals. 25% off the carve MTB pedals. Also 28% off the forte team alloy seatpost. Looks like we are gonna have to make a run to performance.
